Derived from the Book of Protection (Paritta Sutta) from the Pali canon, the Jaya Mangala Gatha is sung here in a rare recording by the Mahabodhi Society of India in original Pali. The Jaya Mangala Gatha is a chant recommended by the Buddha to destroy negativity and to generate auspiciousness…It is said that these verses if chanted with a clear and pure intention are helpful in protecting the seeker by attracting the Good around.

1.Māra
Bāhuṁ sahassam-abhinimmitasāyudhaṁ taṁ,
Girimekhalaṁ uditaghorasasenamāraṁ,
dānādidhammavidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

Māra, the terrible one, who had created a thousand arms with weapons, and had mounted on (the elephant) Girimekhala, with his army, did the lord of sages defeat by such things as generosity and so forth through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

2.Ālavaka
Mārātirekam-abhiyujjhita sabbarattiṁ,
ghoraṁ pan’ Ālavakam-akkhamathaddhayakkhaṁ,
khantīsudantavidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

Even more terrible than Māra was the impatient and obdurate yakkha Ālavaka,
who fought (with the Buddha) throughout the whole night, (him) did the lord of sages defeat by his patience and self-control through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

3.Nālāgiri
Nālāgiriṁ gajavaraṁ atimattabhūtaṁ,
dāvaggicakkam-asanīva sudāruṇaṁ taṁ,
mettambusekavidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

The great elephant Nālāgiri, who was completely intoxicated, fearful,
like a jungle fire, a flaming discus, or a flash of lightning, did the lord of sages defeat by sprinkling (him) with the waters of friendliness through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

4.Aṅgulimāla
Ukkhittakhaggam-atihatthasudāruṇaṁ taṁ
dhāvaṁ tiyojanapathaṅgulimālavantaṁ:
iddhībhisaṅkhatamano jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

With a sword that was lifted high in his outstretched hand, that very fearsome (bandit) the one with a finger necklace (Aṅgulimāla) ran for (the whole of) three leagues up the path: (him) did the lord of sages defeat with the psychic powers created in his mind through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

5.Ciñcā mānavikā
Katvāna kaṭṭham-udaraṁ iva gabbhinīyā,
Ciñcāya duṭṭhavacanaṁ janakāyamajjhe:
santena somavidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

Having made her midriff (look large) with a piece of wood, like one who is pregnant, Ciñcā (then spoke) wicked words in the midst of a group of people:
(her) did the lord of sages defeat by means of his gentleness and peacefulness through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

6.Saccaka
Saccaṁ vihāya mati-Saccakavādaketuṁ,
vādābhiropitamanaṁ ati-andhabhūtaṁ,
paññāpadīpajalito jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

The arrogant Saccaka, who had given up the truth, and had challenged (the Buddha) to a debate, with his mind fixed on his argument, completely blind to the truth, (him) did the lord of sages defeat with the shining lamp of true wisdom through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

7.Nandopananda
Nandopanandabhujagaṁ vibudhaṁ mahiddhiṁ,
puttena therabhujagena damāpayanto,
iddhūpadesavidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

Taming the wise dragon Nandopananda, who had great power, by way of his son (Moggallāna), who was a dragon of an elder, (thus) did the lord of sages defeat (him) by instructing (his son to use) psychic power through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

8.Brahmā Bakā
Duggāhadiṭṭhibhujagena sudaṭṭhahatthaṁ,
brahmaṁ visuddhijutim-iddhi-Bakābhidhānaṁ,
ñāṇāgadena vidhinā jitavā munindo
taṁ tejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni!

He whose hand was badly bitten by the serpent of wrongly taken up views,
the brahma Baka, who was clear and bright, and who possessed psychic powers, did the lord of sages defeat with the medicine of his super-knowledge through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!

9.Buddha
Etā pi Buddhajayamaṅgala-aṭṭhagāthā,
yo vācako dinadine sarate matandī,
hitvānanekavividhāni cupaddavāni,
mokkhaṁ sukhaṁ adhigameyya naro sapañño.

He who recites these eight verses each and every day, which are about
the Buddha’s (many) blessed successes, and remembers them with diligence
after giving up (all) the many and various kinds of adversity, that wise man will (soon thereafter) attain both freedom and happiness.
